This almost perfect cone, which soars 1,633 metres above sea level, has a crater 140 meters deep formed over an ancient colder.It dates back to 3-2 million years ago. On 29th July 1968, it ceased to be dormant and began a new stage of eruptions that has lasted to the present day.
Tapantí National Wildlife Refuge
Tapantí National Wildlife Refuge, with 6.080 hectares and the greatest amount of rain and cloud cover in the country, is located in the Eastern Central Valley, 20 kms. Southeast of the city of Cartago. It straddles the northern slopes of the Talamanca Mountain Range, between 1,200-2,540 metres above sea level.
