and my dress gets caught in a taxi door?' Then we wind up packing too much. So here's the scoop - pack light, then take all your stuff back out and cut the quantity in half. The idea is to bring only enough clothes and necessities to last until you get to a laundromat or store. Clothing and shoes are inexpensive in Mexico (except in the shopping plazas of Cancan's hotel zone). There's always a laundromat (lavanderia) close by that will do it for you inexpensively. Try to take no more than three to four days worth of clothes no matter how long your trip. And take older clothes that you won't miss if the laundry fades or shrinks them. You can always buy what you need. The toiletries needed depend on what you're doing and where. The better hotels have shampoo and soap and just about everything is readily available in stores and supermarkets, so don't bring a gallon. Leave any open toiletries and unwanted clothes in Mexico.
And a couple of other tips from experience:
You are likely to spend most of your time on the beach or the pool or diving and snorkeling, so mostly you will wear a bathing suite for a big part of the day. The rest of the time you will end up in T shirts and shorts or tank tops. For evening time, depends where you stay, what you enjoy and whats your style... Light sun dresses, shorts, sandles, simple and easy is definately acceptable and is the norm... the rest is up to you.
Definatly BRING your Bug repellent, Mosquitos and some times horse flys (in Tulum on the beach) are pretty common though less than what it used to be. In other parts of Mexico in more jungledense areas you are likely to meet many more mosquitoes.
The Sun is EXTREMELY strong on the Mexican Caribbeans if you are traveling between February - September, you will be glad to use strong sun screen. Bring a cooling lotion (with aloe works best) and good light moisturizing for your face with high SPF to avoide sun damage.
Make sure you always carry a bottle of water with you. It is hot and dehydrating during the day. Most hotels supply their guests with mineral or purified safe drinking water.
