Of course Taca delayed my bags again but this time only took 2 days till I got them delivered. I do highly recommend taking your bare necessities in a carry on, due to weight issues they tend to leave a number of bags in San Pedro Sula or La Ceiba, Eventually they do arrive in Roatan.
My Recent trip to Roatan was early September, the Weather couldn’t have been better, I suppose I got lucky and it didn’t rain even once for about 8 days that I was there. I stayed at Coconut Tree Cabins right on half moon bay, in West End. It was probably one of my favorite trips...
The evening I arrived there, it was on one of the scheduled 'Black Outs’ On those nights when there’s a scheduled black out (happens some times between 6 - 9:30 PM) you will see the most a amazing starry skies, there are no lights around at all and it is truly an incredible sight. It is also very soothing, very quiet, no light and no music, a very unique experience, all you hear is the waves...
For Dinner they light up torches and serve whatever they have available under the circumstance... with enough beer or Rum you don’t mind what you eat at that point... just have your sense of humor and enjoy the company.
Besides the incredible diving, fishing and fantastic shore snorkeling (wear a T -shirt - or you can really burn your back)… it’s also a lovely and very friendly place. Nothing commercial about it (yet...), it is very easy going, casual and just so very comfortable and peaceful. Definitely has great colorful and very interesting local people, like the owner of the Salt and Pepper restaurant, right at the Coconut Tree Cabins, (Paul, a British 'expat' full of stories and adventures).
John, (endearingly called - Santa Clause, yes he has that great white beard and wise blue eyes, a retired corporate executive from the Mid West that all his life wanted to live in paradise... and now he does) He has one of the best dive shops on West End, called Bottom line.
Mr. Bush, owner of the Coconut Tree, well known and respected on the Island, who welcomed us with such warmth, as if we were part of the family. We had several Family dinners with him and many of his friends on the island. His Wife, Mrs. Bush, Is one of most extraordinary woman (in that part of the world, women still struggle to gain the professional respect they deserve) She fought to built a children’s' hospital in Roatan, and now, after it was built she runs it in Coaxen hole... And there were many others…
It is a place that does not really offer much in the way of luxury but certainly has enough to offer good comfortable accommodations, many individual cabanas have AC and kitchenettes with refrigerators and coffee makers, the proximity to a few good restaurants and the beach makes it easy to get anything you need. And most important - porches or terraces with Hammocks to be as lazy as you want… Any time day or night.
There are a few good restaurants, for dinner and lunch and a couple good ones for Breakfast. Several gift stands or maybe tents could describe it better.
The lovely and secluded area of West Bay offers a great deal of privacy, great beachfront accommodations but you will need to stock up on some food - there are very few restaurants, sometimes they don’t operate during the low season but usually open for the high season. You could walk to West End along the beach - it would take about 30 minutes or Radio for a water cab - to west end -cost is about 20 limps (about $1.50) and it takes about 7 minuets of a lovely scenic ride.
Take your favorite bug repellent - if you want to lie on the beach use the wooden docks or decks…. Sometimes the sand flies (or 'No SeeEms’) can get pretty hungry. I have seen people get attached and develop an allergic reaction which makes them very uncomfortable, this is usually happening in the really rainy season (June - October) But if you don’t sit on the sand itself and use a strong repellent you will be fine. (Don't panic - the sand flies stay on the sand - never go anywhere else and don't bother you so besides a few mosquitoes you won't have to deal with these...)
I would recommend this area to anyone that likes the off the beaten path, a little raw and very simple kind of adventure. If you like being active there are plenty of activities you can enjoy. If you like incredible views, you will have plenty.
One of my favorites was in the Area of Paya Bay, In East end of Roatan, its about 45 minutes drive from West end to the other side of the island, well worth the ride, you can stop in various areas on the way and enjoy the views.
I don’t think it will be undiscovered and undeveloped for long... so now is the time to enjoy it as it is...
